2 'recycling' projects by IUE students

Students of Department of Public Relations and Advertising, Izmir University of Economics (IUE) developed two communication campaigns for Karşıyaka Municipality in order to separate domestic solid wastes and direct them to recycling. Young people from Izmir University of Economics, who proposed a tournament called “Bil, Ayrıştır, Kazan (Know, Sort, Win” to raise awareness among high school students, conveyed that the toys made from domestic waste can be presented to Izmir residents in a special exhibition in the project called " Atıkları Kahramanın Yap (Make the Wastes Your Hero)" prepared for primary school students.
Third year students of IUE Department of Public Relations and Advertising, Faculty of Communication, presented the projects that they developed meticulously, to the jury on the online platform where Karşıyaka Mayor Dr. Cemil Tugay made the opening speech. The projects, that IUE students prepared by exchanging ideas in the digital environment within the scope of the "Public Relations Campaign" course, received full marks from Mayor Tugay. In addition to Mayor Tugay, Atıl Yakın, Climate Change and Adaptation Unit Coordinator of Karşıyaka Municipality, Environment Protection Manager Aylin Eroğlu, Project Unit Eurodesk Representative Metin Şavural, and Press Director Eylem Başar attended the project presentation.
USEFUL AND EFFECTIVE PROJECTS FOR THE COMMUNITY
Asst. Prof. Zeynep Aksoy, Lecturer at IUE Department of Public Relations and Advertising, pointed out that the projects prepared are effective and feasible. Asst. Prof. Aksoy said, “We offer our students practical courses as well as theoretical ones. This way, students improve themselves and transform the knowledge they have gained in the courses into projects. Our students prepared special campaigns for Karşıyaka Municipality within the scope of the lecture given by me and Cem İlhan, the Head of Tribeca Communication Consultancy. Solid waste recycling; is very important for the nature, our future and our health. Students, especially by drawing attention to this issue, prepared effective studies. They focused on raising awareness among high school and primary school students”.
STUDIES WILL CONTINUE
Providing information about the projects, Asst. Prof. Aksoy said, “The first of the projects submitted to Karşıyaka Municipality is for high school students and aims to ensure that young people take an active role in a sustainable world. The focus of the project is to organize a tournament called "Know, Sort, Win" among the high schools in Karşıyaka between June and October. Another project is for elementary school students. In the project titled 'Make the Wastes Your Hero', it is aimed that students design toys from domestic waste and display them. It was conveyed to the municipality that social media should also be used creatively and actively in projects. Municipal officials also liked the communication campaigns prepared. From now on, we will continue to develop projects with our students that bring solutions to the problems we experience as a society with different perspectives.”
WE SHOULD LISTEN TO YOUTH CAREFULLY
Karşıyaka Mayor Dr. Cemil Tugay, on the other hand, stated that they trust young people, and he said, “The sorting of waste and directing it to recycling is a subject we value most. I would like to thank all our friends and lecturers who have made efforts. I think young people's perspective is very special and different. I believe that we should always listen to the youth carefully. I trust young people". Prof. Ebru Uzunoğlu, Dean of IUE Faculty of Communication, said that it is very important for them to raise young people who have social and environmental awareness and contribute to the institutions.
